SUMMARY:American Library In Paris -- Virtual Event
DESCRIPTION:Although the physical space has temporarily closed\, the Library will continue with its Evening with an Author programming during the period of confinement. Our events will continue to be free and open to the public via Zoom (please RSVP here to receive meeting details and password). Events begin at 17h00 (Central European Time). \nPlease join the American Library in Paris as we check in with author Whitney Scharer\, author of The Age of Light. This absorbing debut tells a fictionalized account of Lee Miller’s life\, focusing on the years she spent in Paris and her tumultuous relationship with Surrealist artist Man Ray. An icon during her own time\, Lee’s bold vision and fearlessness still serve today as a template for a life lived fully. In Whitney’s novel\, we follow Lee through her time as a model\, Surrealist photographer\, fashion photographer\, war correspondent\, and gourmet chef. Whitney will discuss her book as well as provide us with updates about its reception and translation.

SUMMARY:Housebound Unbound: Historical Fiction - You Had To Be There
DESCRIPTION:E.L. Doctorow wrote: “A historian will tell you what happened. A novelist will tell you what it was like to be there.” What obligations do the writers of historical novels to be faithful to the historical record? Is there actually a different story they’re trying to tell? And how complicated does that become when a book features real-life characters? Join Clayton (The Last Train to London)\, Scharer (The Age of Light) and George (The Paris Hours) as they discuss how each addressed these issues in their most recent novels.

SUMMARY:Newburyport Literary Festival...Online!
DESCRIPTION:I’m “delighted” (har har) to be moderating the AFTERNOON DELIGHT — Sex in Fiction panel for the Newburyport Literary Festival\, featuring Christopher Castellani\, Jenna Blum\, and Stephen Kiernan. \nSeminar description: For the past 17 years\, The Literary Review in Scotland has published an article — “Worst Sex Scenes of the Year” — which is both squirm-inducing and the journal’s most popular item. Notice\, the literary world holds no least-vivid description contest\, no award for most unrealistic dialogue. Writing about sex walks its own unique tightrope: how specific to be about what the characters are doing\, whether to use common or latinate or crude words to describe what body part they are doing it with or to\, how to avoid being pornographic or cliched. These challenges rise to a new level in the age of #metoo\, the powerful movement in sexual truth-telling and accountability that has jailed a movie producer\, ousted a U.S. Senator\, and revealed the reviled from coast to coast. This panel will investigate how writing sex scenes ought to occur in this new context\, and whether it might be done without earning notice in unwanted annual awards.

SUMMARY:Kauai Writers Conference
DESCRIPTION:Master Class: Bringing the Past Alive with Whitney Scharer & Priya Parmar\nThis class with Priya and Whitney is an exceptional opportunity for writers of historical fiction to hone their craft. It is designed for writers of this genre at all levels of accomplishment. Historical fiction presents unique challenges. It is neither biography nor pure fiction. Subjects’ lives must be meticulously researched\, and the knowledge gained has to inspire rather than merely be reported upon. Achieving a distinctive voice for each character is nowhere more important than in historical fiction. Each must come alive on the page with authenticity\, remaining always true to their personality. Both Priya and Whitney will inspire their students with accounts of their fascination in immersing themselves in the lives of real people\, and extrapolating narratives as plausible as if they were purely factual. \nHistorical fiction presents its own challenges of point of view\, character development\, and story arc. Priya and Whitney each deal with these issues in unique ways. You will learn not merely to imitate them\, but to adapt the lessons they have learned to tell your story in the way that rings most true to you and your characters. \n

SUMMARY:Toronto International Festival of Authors: Reading & Interview with Helena Janeczek
DESCRIPTION:Looking forward to being a part of the Toronto Festival of Authors\, where I’ll be appearing on a panel with Helena Janeczek. \nIf a picture is worth a thousand words\, a photographer’s story is boundless. Uncover the lives of two of France’s most storied female photographers of the 20th century\, as told by two of the year’s most highly-anticipated historical fiction novels. Helena Janeczek presents The Girl with the Leica\, which recounts the life of real-life photographer Gerda Taro\, who died during the Spanish Civil War. The book made Janeczek the first woman in 15 years to win Italy’s Strega Prize. In The Age of Light\, debut author Whitney Scharer tells the story of model turned photographer Lee Miller and her search to forge a new identity as an artist after a life spent as a muse. The authors will bring their immersive imagery to life with live readings\, followed by a discussion on paralleled themes in their work led by interviewer Kate Taylor. Hosted by David Bradford.

SUMMARY:Boston Book Festival: "Fiction: Art and Artists" panel
DESCRIPTION:Panel event with Catherine Cusset\, moderated by Dawn Tripp. \n\nThe two novelists whose work we’ll explore in this session craft amazing stories of visual artists who had to fight to pursue their art. In a unique hybrid of biography and fiction\, Catherine Cusset tells the Life of David Hockney\, daring to imagine the psyche of the groundbreaking gay artist. The result\, according to the New York Times\, is “an affirming vision of a restless talent propelled by optimism and chance.” In The Age of Light\, debut novelist Whitney Scharer illuminates the life of Vogue model turned photographer Lee Miller\, who had to struggle to achieve respect as an artist in her own right–including from her lover\, Man Ray. These two beautifully wrought novels—both works of art in their own right—offer insights into the artistic drive of their subjects. Moderating their conversation is Dawn Tripp\, whose most recent novel is Georgia: A Novel of Georgia O’Keeffe. Sponsored by Other Press.
